A lost soul or an extremely confused person, according to personal opinion; one who is believed to be completely off track either on a specific topic or just with life in general.

"Chuck's a bright kid . . . but lately I just wanna call him Elmer."
Explanation:
Derived from the mythical camping story of Elmer. I'm not sure of "Elmer's" origin, but as kids, its was legendary and a widely known tradition to drag out a loud yell for "Elmer". I believe he was supposed to be a young boy, lost in the forest. The yell represented a search for the young boy. (Please feel free to add to the story if you know the history)
