How did it come to be used this way?:
Betty Boop was ahead of her time. In the 1930s cartoons developed by The Fleischer Bros., Betty was first a cartoon female dog who had a boyfriend dog named Bimbo. As the character grew in popularity, she became a real girl and her ears changed to hoop earrings. She had other friends and their antics were very entertaining, sometimes risque by the standards of the era.
Betty's clothing was always leg and cleavage revealing and her attitude was that of the 21st century women's. Her popularity is international.
