How is it used?:
Throw a sheep at John
What does it mean?:
It means to own.
This is a method of getting someone's attention on the popular website Facebook.
How did it come to be used this way?:
Facebook, a popular social networking site, provides several ways to get in touch with people you know. In addition to full-fledged messages, the site allows people to send "pokes" - which was just a quick note which said "[Person's name] has poked you." When Facebook released their API, several developers created "Super Poke" applications which allowed other options, such as "Give a beer to [Person's name]" or "Slap [Person's name]" or "Hug [Person's name]" and of course, "Throw a sheep at [Person's name]."
The notion of throwing a sheep is absurd, and it likely has origins that go back further, either to video games or something like Monty Python or the like. Anyone who can take this answer back further is welcome to edit it.
Trivia/fun facts:
I asked the question because when I was young "throwing a sheep" at someone meant a form of "mooning" just as "throwing a hairy goat" does but facebook seems to have changed the meaning I grew up with. to eat pussy. The meaning when I was young implied that someone enjoyed beastiality or that farm animals would be the best they could hope for.
