Definition of: asphalt

(as′fôlt, -falt) noun
1. A bituminous, solid, brownish-black, odorous combustible mixture of different hydrocarbons occurring in superficial deposits in various parts of the world and also obtained as a residue in the refining of petroleum; mineral pitch.
2. A mixture of this with sand or gravel, used for paving, etc. Also as·phal·tum (as·fal′təm), as·phal′tus.
