One of the two main divisions of the Indo-European languages; namely, the western division, including the Hellenic, Italic, Celtic, and Germanic languages and dialects, in which the proto-Indo-European palatalized velar stop (k) is retained as a velar, as in the Latin word centum “hundred.” Compare SATEM.
