Definition of: Dark Ages

1. The period in European history between the fall of the Western Roman Empire (A.D. 476) and the Italian Renaissance.
2. The early part of the Middle Ages, to the end of the tenth century: so called because the period was considered to be characterized by a waning of Roman civilization and a retardation in social, political, and intellectual development.
