1. A cell or micro–organism consisting of two cells united.
2. Bacteriol. Any of a genus (Diplococcus) of parasitic bacteria, Gram–positive, usually encapsulated and occurring in pairs or chains, including D. pneumoniae, the infective agent of lobar pneumonia. See illustration under BACTERIA.
