Physics
1. The principle that an atom deprived of one of its electrons acquires the physicochemical properties of the element preceding it in the periodic table. See ELECTROMOTIVE SERIES.
2. The statement that radioactive emission of an alpha particle lowers the atomic number of the element by 2, while emission of a beta particle raises the atomic number by 1.
