Either of two spiny, deep–rooted shrubs or small trees of the pea family, found in the southwestern United States, and extending southward to Peru. The honey mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa or juliflora) yields sweet algarroba pods used for cattle fodder; the screw–pod mesquite (Strombocarpa odorata), or screwbean, has edible spiral pods.
