1. Either of two isomeric compounds, the alpha and beta, C10H7OH, derived from naphthalene by replacing an atom of hydrogen by the hydroxyl group; specifically, the beta variety. They are used as antiseptics and in the manufacture of synthetic dyes.
2. Any one of a class of naphthalene derivatives containing the hydroxyl group. Also naph′tol (-tōl, -tol). [<NAPHTH(ALENE + -OL2]
