(outrig′ər) noun
1. A part built or arranged to project beyond a natural outline, as of a vessel or machine.
2. A projecting contrivance terminating in a boatlike float, braced to the side of a canoe to prevent capsizing.
3. Naut. a A spar for extending a sail or rope farther than the beam of the vessel would otherwise permit, b A boom swung out from a vessel, to which to secure boats.
4. A bracket projecting from the side of a narrow rowboat or shell, and provided with a rowlock for an oar or scull.
5. A boat or shell equipped with such a bracket.
6. Aeron. A projecting contrivance to support various components of an airplane: also called tail boom.
