1. To continue firmly in some course, state, etc., especially despite opposition or difficulties.
2. To be insistent, as in repeating a statement.
3. To continue to exist; endure. [<L persistere <per- thoroughly + sistere stand] Synonyms: continue, endure, insist, last, persevere, remain, stay. As applied to duration, last is applied chiefly to things, endure to either persons or things. That remains or stays which is simply let alone; that which endures or persists does so against opposing forces. A man insists upon his demand, persists in his refusal. See under INSIST, PERSEVERE.
