The methods, theories, or practice of a group of painters of the late 19th century who emphasized the subjective prerogatives of the artist as opposed to the literal or idealistic representation of academic painting and the supposed objectivity of impressionism. Cézanne, Van Gogh, and Gauguin are considered its chief exponents.
