Definition of: strontium

A radioactive isotope of strontium of mass number 90, having a half-life of 28 years, present in used reactor fuel and in the fall-out from nuclear explosions, where it constitutes a special hazard because its chemical similarity to calcium results in its being metabolized and accumulated in bone and other living tissues and secretions such as milk.
