A war weapon used by the Algonquian Indians of North America, originally a carved club about three feet long, having a knob of solid wood on the end in which a piece of bone or metal was inserted; later, the light ax or hatchet–shaped weapon with an iron blade obtained in trade with Europeans. Tomahawks were either thrown or wielded in the hand.
