1. The concussion of confined water when its flow is suddenly arrested, as when a faucet is suddenly closed.
2. The hammering sound caused in pipes containing water when live steam is admitted.
3. A sealed tube void of air but containing water which strikes against the ends of the tube with a sharp knocking sound when shaken: used to demonstrate the equal rate of fall of solids and liquids in a vacuum.
