Any one of three isomeric colorless hydrocarbons, C6H4(CH3) 2, contained in coal tar and wood tar. A mixture of the three yields a colorless, inflammable liquid used as a solvent and in medicine as an antiseptic. Also xy′lol (-lōl, -lol). [<Gk. xylon wood + -ENE]
