In textiles, the process of raising design from the surface, so that it stands out in relief: usually done, in making embossed damask, seersucker, etc., by passing a resin–impregnated fabric between hot, engraved metal rollers, but for velvet and plush effected by shearing high pile to different levels or by pressing parts flat.
