A disease confined to tropical Africa, caused by either of two species of trypanosomes (Trypanosoma gambiense or T. rhodesiense) usually transmitted by the bite of the tsetse fly and marked by recurrent fever and headaches, progressive lethargy, somnolence and death. Also called sleeping sickness. Also African trypanosomiasis.
