Definition of: atomic theory

1. Chem. The doctrine that elements unite with one another, atom by atom, and in definite simple proportions by weight.
2. Physics The concept that all bulk matter is composed of atoms, and that the properties of matter are ultimately to be understood in terms of the properties and interactions of the component atoms.
