Definition of: boatswain

(bō′sən, rarely bōt′swān′) noun
1. A subordinate officer of a vessel, who has general charge of the rigging, anchors, etc., and whose business it is to pipe the crew to duty with his whistle, which is his badge.
2. On a fighting ship, a warrant officer, trained in seamanship. Also spelled bosun.
