1. A hawser carried and paid out by a boat so as to connect a vessel with an object towards which it is to be warped.
2. A rope used to assist the towline of a boat in towing; also, a line by which a boat is fastened to a vessel or eased into a gangway. Also guess rope, guess warp, ges·warp (ges·wôrp′).
