In Greek legend, a son of Atreus, brother of Agamemnon, and a king of Sparta; after his wife Helen was abducted by Paris, Menelaus led the Greek princes against Troy, where he defeated Paris; reconciled with Helen, after eight years of wandering, he returned with her to Sparta.
