3. A messenger.
4. An Old World plant (genus Mercurialis), especially M. annua, the annual or French mercury, used in medicine, and M. perennis, the perennial (or dog's) mercury, which is poisonous.

1. In Roman mythology, the herald and messenger of the gods, god of commerce, eloquence, and skill, and patron of messengers, travelers, merchants, and thieves; identified with the Greek Hermes.
2. Astron. The planet of the solar system nearest the sun, from which its mean distance is about 36,000,000 miles. It is the smallest of the major planets, having a diameter of about 3,000 miles, and revolving about the sun in 88 of our days.
