In Greek mythology, a princess of Athens who was raped by her brother–in–law Tereus, who then tore out her tongue; when, in revenge, she and her sister Procne killed his son Itys, the gods changed Tereus into a hoopoe, Procne into a swallow, and Philomela into a nightingale.
