1. Back: reduce to lead back, remit to send back.
2. Again; anew; again and again: regenerate. Re- in this second sense is freely used in Modern English, as in the list of words below. It is hyphenated, in certain cases, to prevent confusion with a similarly spelled word having a different meaning (re-treat to treat again, retreat to go back), to prevent mispronunciation (re-argue, re-urge), and also in the coining of new words.
