An acute infectious rickettsial disease caused by a micro–organism (Rickettsia rickettsii) transmitted by the bite of certain ticks (genus Dermacentor): it is marked by fever, chills, headache, and diffuse pains, and is endemic in Rocky Mountain and Pacific coast States.
