1. In the Bible (Song of Sol. 2:1), an unknown flower, perhaps the sutumn crocus or the narcissus.
2. A tall, hardy deciduous shrub or small tree (Hibiscus syriacus) of Asian origin, having large, usually roseate flowers. Also called althea, hibiscus.
3. A species (Hypericum calycinum) of shrubby plants having evergreen leaves and large yellow flowers.
