Definition of: sand painting

An indigenous Amerindian art form practiced especially by the Navaho. Pigments of finely ground sand in five colors are trickled on a ground base of neutral–colored sand to give highly symbolic representations (usually the gods, a rainbow, lightning, etc.). Each painting, whether three or twenty feet in diameter, has to be started at dawn and finished by sunset.
