Definition of: sex chromosome

Biol.
A chromosome whose presence in the reproductive cells of certain plants and animals is associated with the determination of the sex of offspring. In mammals the ovum carries two X-chromosomes and sperm an X- and a Y-chromosome; females are produced by a paired XX in the fertilized ovum, males by a paired XY. Also called allosome, heterochromosome.
