Definition of: Stamp Act

An act of the British Parliament, passed in March, 1765, and repealed in March, 1766, which required the American colonists to affix to various legal and commercial papers, as well as to pamphlets, newspapers, vellum, parchment, or paper, a government stamp varying in price from a halfpenny up to £10.
