1. That part of an ocean passenger vessel, formerly near the stern, but now usually situated in the forward lower decks, allotted to passengers paying the lowest fares.
2. In a war vessel, the portion of the berth deck just forward of the wardroom, appropriated as the quarters of junior officers, clerks, etc. See GUNROOM.
3. The act of steering.
4. The state of being steered; direction; the effect of the helm on a vessel.
