1. A hard, durable, kiln–burnt clay, reddish–brown in color and usually unglazed: widely used as a structural material and also, in glazed and colored forms, for tiles, building façades, etc.
2. A statue or figure made of this clay.
3. A brownish–orange color resembling that of terra cotta. [<Ital., cooked earth]
