(vandəl) noun
One of a Germanic people from a region between the Vistula and Oder rivers, south of the Baltic, who invaded the western Roman Empire in the fourth century. At the beginning of the fifth century, they ravaged Gaul and overran Spain and North Africa. In 455 they pillaged the city of Rome, destroying many artistic and literary treasures. Their kingdom, established in North Africa with Carthage as its capital, was overthrown in 534 by the Byzantines under Belisarius.
