Definition of: voice

(vois) noun
1. The sound produced by the vocal organs of a person or animal; also, the quality or character of such sound: a melodious voice.
2. The power or faculty of vocal utterance; speech.
3. A sound suggesting vocal utterance or speech: the voice of the wind.
4. Opinion or choice expressed; also, the right of expressing a preference or judgment: to have a voice in the affair.
5. Instruction; admonition; teaching: the voice of nature.
6. A speaker; also, a person or agency by which the thought, wish, or purpose of another is expressed: This journal is the voice of the teaching profession.
7. Expression of thought, opinion, feeling, etc.: to give voice to one's ideals.
8. Phonet. The sound produced by vibration of the vocal cords, as heard in the utterance of vowels and certain consonants, as (g), (m),(v): distinguished from whisper, and also from breath, as heard in (k), (sh), (f).
9. Musical tone produced by vibration of the vocal cords and resonating in the cavities of the throat and head; also, the ability to sing, or the state of the vocal organs with regard to this ability: to be in poor voice.
10. Gram. The relation of the action expressed by the verb to the subject, or the form of the verb indicating this relationship. In English, as in most Indo–European languages, a distinction between an active and a passive voice is made, indicating, respectively, that the subject of the sentence is either performing the action or is being acted upon. (Active: He wrote the letter. Passive: The letter was written by him.) In Greek and Sanskrit verbs, there is, in addition, a middle voice, representing the subject as acting upon himself directly, or in his own interest.
