1. A grain yielding an edible flour, the annual product of a cereal grass (genus Triticum): the most important of the cereals, it is excelled only by rice in the number of people by whom it is used as a staple food.
2. The plant that produces this grain, especially Triticum aestivum and varieties, a tall, slender annual or biennial of cosmopolitan distribution, bearing at its summit an imbricated spike of usually four-flowered spikelets called the ear or head.
