A is used before a word beginning with a consonant sound, now including h when pronounced: a history, a hotel (Brit. often an hotel). Before an unaccented syllable beginning with h some writers prefer the older usage: an historical novel, an hysterical cry. An is used before a word beginning with a vowel sound, including one which is pronounced though not written: an X-ray, an n-dimensional figure.
