Saved by the bell is an old term that came around before medicine was as advanced as it is today. Some people would request to be buried with a string attached to their wrist that led to the surface and was attached to a bell so if they came to in their coffin they could ring the bell. So basically saved by the bell used to literally meant saved by the bell, but since people dont get buried alive much more it means getting out of a tough situation by a bell ringing or something similar.
I think this is a common but incorrect history of this phrase — most credible sources would say that it comes from boxing, where a boxer being badly beaten and in danger of losing is ‘saved by the bell’ ending the round. There was nothing to connect it to bells on coffins at the time we had bells on coffins — it is a modern reinterpretation
I do not even kow how I ended up here, butt I thought this post was great.

Theirs no actual historical evidence that saved by the bell devised from being buried alive, but early 1900 their is, and that came from the boxing ring, saved by the bell was used to save a opponent from being pummelled in the ringâŠ

LikeDislikeThe expression âgraveyard shiftâ meaning night shift comes from your bell story
Graveyard worker sat up awake on first night after burial to make sure bell wasnât rung by buried person
First referenced, in print,in a 1893 newspaper story about a long boxing match. One of the boxers was saved by the bell multiple times.
