1. The hard, woody, pot- or urnshaped fruit of several tropical American trees of the family Lecythidaceae, especially Lecythis ollaria and L. zabucajo; also, the plant, the fruit of which has a circular lid which, when the nut-like seeds are ripe, separates with a cracking sound.
2. A barrel-shaped melting pot used in making flint glass.
