A member of any of the tribes of American Indians formerly inhabiting the Great Plains of North America, belonging variously to the Algonquian, Athapascan, Caddoan, Kiowan, Siouan, and Uto–Aztecan linguistic stocks, but having in common the nomadic culture of the plains and dependence on the buffalo: also called Buffalo Indian.
