Definition of: sympathetic nervous system

Anat.
That part of the autonomic nervous system which serves the viscera, glands, heart, blood vessels, and smooth muscles. It consists of a chain of ganglia on each side of the spinal column between the cervical and sacral regions, connected with nerve plexuses, and in general produces effects opposite to those coming from the parasympathetic system.
