Definition of: Triple Alliance

1. An alliance between England, Holland, and Sweden against Louis XIV of France, formed in 1668.

A league between England, France, and Holland, formed in 1717, but called Quadruple when joined by Austria in 1718, designed to secure the sucsession to the crown of England for the house of Hanover, that of France for the house of Bourbon, and to prevent the union of France and Spain under one crown.
