The former name of Myanmar, a country in SE Asia bordered by India and Bangladesh on the western side and China, Laos, and Thailand on the east; 261,228 square miles; capital, Rangoon (Yangon); pop. 43,000,000; the coastal border is on the Bay of Bengal.
