1. A semi-opaque, vitreous material that is applied by fusion to gold, silver, copper, or other metals, or to porcelain, either as a decoration in colors or to form a surface for encaustic painting; also, as a lining for culinary and chemical vessels.
2. A work executed in such material: a fine cloisonné enamel.
3. One of various glossy lacquers or varnishes used for leather, paper, etc.
4. A kind of cosmetic or paint for the face, supposed to imitate exactly the natural gloss of the complexion.
5. Anat. The layer of hard, glossy, calcareous material forming the exposed outer covering of the teeth and protecting the dentine.
