One of the subdivisions of the Thallophyta: non–flowering plants of wide distribution and great variety, devoid of chlorophyll, reproducing chiefly by asexual means and obtaining nourishment either as parasites on living organisms or as saprophytes on dead organic matter. They include the molds, mildews, rusts, and mushrooms, and are subdivided into bacteria or fission fungi (Schizomycetes), slime fungi (Myxomycetes), algal fungi (Phycomycetes), ascus fungi (Ascomycetes), basidium fungi (Basidomycetes), and the Fungi Imperfecti, not yet classified.
