2. In Mormon belief, a prophet and sacred historian of the fourth century A.D. who wrote, on golden tablets, a history of an early American people. The tablets, called the Book of Mormon, one of the holy books of the Mormon faith, were found by Joseph Smith near Palmyra, New York, and translated and published by him in 1830.
