Definition of: National Guard

U.S.
An organized land or air force maintained by a State, a Territory, or the District of Columbia, usually in conjunction with but not under the direct control of the U.S. Army or Air Force. Its units or personnel operate on a semiactive basis as part of the militia except in national emergencies or under special circumstances, when they may be called into Federal service.
