(tûr′it) noun
1. A small tower, often merely ornamental, rising above a larger structure, as on a castle.
2. Mil. A rotating armed tower, large enough to contain a powerful gun or guns and gunners, forming part of a man–of–war or of a fort; a similar enclosed structure in a tank or a bombing or combat airplane.
3. The clerestory of a railway car.
4. In ancient warfare, a high wooden structure, supported on slides or wheels, intended to enable besiegers to surmount the walls against which it was pushed.
