1. The narrow part of the body between the chest and the hips.
2. The middle part or section of any object, especially if of less diameter than the ends: the waist of a violin.
3. Naut. That section of a ship between the quarter–deck and the forecastle.
4. The central section of an airplane.
5. That part of a woman's dress or other garment covering the body from the waistline to the neck or shoulders; a bodice; also, an undergarment for children, to which other garments may be buttoned.
